The Writing Desk Edit

Five solid-timber desks for the season of long evenings.

The Writing Desk Edit: five solid timber writing desks arranged on deep navy, from chestnut turned leg to curved Nordic mango wood

The hybrid working habit has settled in for good, the clocks go back this weekend, and every British home suddenly needs a proper place to sit and think. This week we went through the whole desk range and pulled out five favourites: turned-leg chestnut, pale oak-ish, compact Nordic, two-drawer mango and one softly curved rebel.

The Desk Gets Its Season Back

October is the month the desk earns its keep again. The hybrid working habit has settled into British houses for good, the clocks go back this weekend, and somewhere between the homework, the tax folder and the Christmas-card list, most homes suddenly need a proper place to sit and think. Not a laptop on the kitchen table. A desk.

This week we went through the whole desk range and pulled out the five we would actually take home: turned legs, honest timber, drawers where drawers belong, and proportions that suit real rooms rather than showroom ones. Five finds, each one chosen for a different sort of sitter.

The One We Would All Take Home

Find number one is the chestnut of the range. The Chestnut Turned Leg Writing Desk has everything a good desk should: turned legs with a bit of story to them, a wide working surface, and two drawers deep enough for the things that usually migrate to the kitchen drawer. The chestnut finish reads warm under a lamp, which matters enormously for the next five months, when most of your desk hours will happen after dark.

We would happily put this in a living room corner rather than hiding it away. It is furniture first, workspace second.

The Wire-It-In Classic

The Oakish Turned Leg Writing Desk is the same honest shape in a paler, cooler timber, the sort of desk that disappears into a light scheme and makes a narrow spare-room corner look considered. Turned legs, clean lines, a top with room for a laptop, a notebook and the all-important lamp.

If your desk lives in a bedroom or a living room rather than a dedicated study, this is the tone that behaves itself around everything else.

The Small-Space Answer

Not every home can give a whole corner to work. The Mini Nordic Style Writing Desk is the proof that a compact desk can still be a proper one: Nordic proportions, slender tapered legs and a footprint small enough for the gap beside a wardrobe or the end of a hallway. Students, spare rooms and box-room offices, this is yours.

Its height still takes a full-size chair, which is the difference between a real desk and a side table pretending.

The Quiet Workhorse

The Scandi Mango Wood Two-Drawer Writing Desk is the one for people who actually use their drawers: two roomy ones, solid mango wood with all the grain that material brings, and an unfussy Scandi shape that suits almost any room. Mango wood is a favourite of ours, warm and characterful, and it takes the knocks of daily use without sulking.

If one desk has to do everything from weekday emails to Sunday life admin, this is the all-rounder of the five.
